Nose surgery or Rhinoplasty is performed to improve the appearance of the nose and achieve better facial harmony.
Nose surgery is performed via incisions made inside the nose, so that no scars are visible afterwards.
In nose surgery, if one part of the nose is altered, often all parts need adjusting to achieve complete harmony. If you have a prominent lump, then nose surgery is performed to the bone and cartilage to reduce it. If the nose is too wide, surgery will make it narrower. If the nose is bent to one side, nose surgery will straighten it. If the internal bone of the nose (the septum) is deviated, then there is usually some obstruction to the breathing. The surgery will correct this also.
With modern surgical techniques, nose surgery only lasts for about one hour. Swelling and bruising around the eyes may occur but this usually clears within 5-6 days. An injection is made into the tissues, at the end of the procedure, to minimise such bruising. A small splint is placed on the nose, following nose surgery, and remains in place for 7 days. When the splint is removed, the patient will notice some swelling, but the casual observer would not notice anything abnormal. Following nose surgery, the skin will shrink and adjust to the new framework.
In the first two weeks after nose surgery, there may be nasal stuffiness. Also, the sense of smell may be diminished for a few days, following the nose surgery.
