We must take 30 telephone calls or email enquiries a week from women around the UK asking for liposuction to the tummy area. Our role at the Landauer Cosmetic Surgery Group is to make sure people get the right information about the cosmetic surgery operation that they are wanting and to then refer them to the best BAPRAS accredited surgeon who specialises in their particular cosmetic surgery requirements, in this case a tummy tuck or liposuction. This service is free.
We ask a series of questions to establish what the problem is and what the patient wants to achieve. The vast majority of the time, the lady wants a flat, trim tummy. Once we have established that their body mass index is within parameters (no more than 28) The conversation goes something like this:-
Landauer: “Have you had children?
Patient: “Yes, I have had two children aged 4 and 7 ”
Landauer: “Ok and would you say that you now have some loose, stretched skin around the front of the tummy as well as some fat?”
Patient: “Yes I have some loose skin and it overhangs over the top of my jeans. I have to buy a bigger size of jeans or skirts. I want some liposuction to my tummy to get rid of it”
If a patient has stretched skin to the tummy following childbirth or weight loss then the only way to deal with it is to remove it with a tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty to give it its proper name. There may be some fat behind this stretched skin which is actually adding a bit of support and if sucked out with liposuction then the loose skin would simply hang even more.
Patients will often say that they picked liposuction surgery because it sounds cheaper, less invasive, less scarring, less recovery time and generally less frightening. This may be true to some degree but ultimately you will need the procedure that will achieve the result.
If you have stretched skin to the tummy and you want a flat tummy again then chances are you will need a tummy tuck along with perhaps some liposuction too. Liposuction on it’s own in most cases like this will at best make no difference and at worse make the area look even worse.
