Cosmetic Breast Surgery

There are a number of different Breast Surgery options available:

Breast Uplift

Following breast enlargement surgery, a woman can engage in full sporting activity after 5 weeks. The implants used for breast enlargement surgery are a material foreign to the body and your body will naturally build a wall or capsule around the breast implants. With modern breast enlargement surgery, breast implants are so good that the degree of capsule formation following a breast enlargement operation is small and rarely presents a problem.

If the breasts are adequate in size but the drooping is severe, then breast elevation is required. In this procedure, excess skin is removed and the nipple is re-sited at a better position in the new, younger profile breasts.

Where the breasts are small but the droop is excessive, a correction of the breast droop is necessary and, at the same time, a breast augmentation is carried out, with the introduction of an implant.

The exact type of breast surgery that you will require will be determined by a consultation with the cosmetic surgeon.

Breast Enlargement

Society places great emphasis on the appearance of the female breast and many women feel inadequate if they consider themselves to be under-developed. The smallness of the breasts may be due to failure of development at puberty or excessive atrophy after childbearing.

This can be corrected by placing an implant behind the existing breast tissue. The implant is usually inserted through a very small incision placed in the fold beneath the breast. The resulting scar is very small and is barely visible.

After insertion of the implant, the small incision is closed with one skin suture. A special dressing is applied and this should be left in place until the suture is removed, at 7 to 10 days by your cosmetic surgeon. It is recommended that a sports bra is purchased, about 3 days after the operation, to have it available to wear once the dressing has been removed and the suture taken out. Once the suture has been removed, the patient can shower or bath.

The woman can engage in full sporting activity at 5 weeks when, if she so wishes, she can do so without wearing a bra. The implant is a material foreign to the body and the body will naturally build a wall around the implant. This wall that the body makes is called a capsule and it occurs in the presence of all implants. Modern implants are so good that the degree of capsule formation is small and does not usually present a problem. Very occasionally, one of the breasts may feel slightly firmer than the other. If this bothers the patient then a slight pressure on the breast will cause it to become soft again.

The majority of women do not experience this hardening and can usually forget that they ever underwent the operation. In the first few weeks after surgery, the nipple area may be more sensitive than normal and sometimes there may be a small patch of numbness just above the scar. Such changes are invariably of a temporary nature. Despite the potential problems outlined, the great majority of patients are very happy and satisfied with their breast enlargement. They feel more self confident and enjoy wearing a wider variety of attractive clothing.

Breast Reduction

Women with heavy pendulous breasts frequently suffer from back pain, shoulder ache or chronic irritation of the skin beneath the breasts. There are often painful grooves over the shoulder, caused by bra straps. These physical problems are enough in themselves, but in addition to this there is social embarrassment and mental anguish. Breast reduction surgery can minimise these effects.

During surgery excess skin and breast tissue is removed and smaller, younger profile breasts are created. Twenty five years ago breast reduction was a major operation and many women remained in hospital for as a long as a week after surgery. Today however, thanks to the great advances in knowledge of the breast blood supply and modern surgical techniques, the operation is no longer a major procedure. Patients usually only have to stay one night in hospital following surgery. The operation is carried out under general anaesthesia.

Incisions are made below the nipple and in the fold beneath the breast. Breast tissue and skin are removed. The nipple is then moved into its new site in the new and reduced younger profile breast, either with an intact blood supply or as a free graft. There is sometimes a delay in healing around the nipple and when a free nipple graft has to be used, there is a loss of height in projection of the nipple. Surgery takes about two hours.

Postoperative discomfort is relatively minor as the breast is a skin organ. A small drain is removed at eighteen hours and the patient is usually able to go home within twenty four hours. The sutures are removed between seven and ten days after surgery. The patient can then take a shower or a bath. In the event of slight discharge from the wounds it is recommended to take regular salt baths.

The scars fade in sequence. The scar around the nipple fades fIrst, followed by the scar to the fold beneath the breast. The final scar sometimes becomes raised and reddened or may stretch and widen before it fades. After surgery there may be slight irregularity in the size and shape of the breasts, and in the position of the nipples. These differences tend to be very minor and rarely need adjustment. Women with large breasts tend to have little nipple sensitivity. After breast reduction, the sensation is greatly reduced but sensitivity will return very gradually. A woman will not be able to breast feed after this type of operation. However a woman with large breasts are often unable to breast feed at all.
