Breast Reduction
Breast reduction cosmetic surgery is for women with heavy, pendulous breasts.
Women with overly-large breasts may suffer from back pain, shoulder ache, skin irritation in the area beneath the breasts and pain caused by bra straps, all of which can be alleviated with breast reduction surgery. They may also experience social embarrassment and mental anguish - more distressing effects that breast reduction can minimise.
The Breast Reduction Surgical Procedure
In its early years, the breast reduction procedure used to be considered a major operation, but thanks to advances in the knowledge of the breast blood supply and modern surgical techniques, it is now a relatively straightforward, common undertaking for plastic surgeons.
During breast reduction surgery, excess skin and breast tissue is removed and smaller, younger profile breasts are created. Incisions are made below the nipple, and in the fold beneath the breast, where breast tissue and skin are removed. The nipple is then moved to its new site in the reduced profile breast. Breast reductions take around two hours to complete and are performed under general anaesthesia.
Patients usually spend a night in hospital following breast reduction surgery and discomfort following the breast reduction is relatively minor. The sutures are removed seven days after the breast reduction surgery.
After your Breast Reduction
Once breast reduction surgery is completed, the healing process can begin. Breast reduction scars fade over time, with the scar around the nipple tending to be the area that fades first, followed by the scar to the fold beneath the breast.
After breast size reduction, the sensation in the nipple may be reduced but it will return very gradually. Some women will be unable to breastfeed following breast reduction surgery.
