Breast enlargement surgery or breast implants, is medically referred to as breast Augmentation or Mammoplasty. This is a cosmetic surgery procedure that involves the insertion of an implant behind the existing breast tissue.
Breast enlargement surgery is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures available and can give the desired results of an enhancement to the existing breasts whilst keeping a natural look and feel.
People may wish to have breast surgery for a number of reasons, for example they may be unhappy with having different sized breasts or unsatisfied with the breast size and shape. Some ladies may have lost breast fullness following child birth or natural ageing, resulting in the breast starting to sag and droop. Additionally people may be looking into breast surgery purely for cosmetic reasons and wanting a larger bust.
In general they are usually looking to reshape, enhance and enlarge the size of their current breasts, which can lead to increases in confidence and self-esteem.
Breast enlargement surgery is performed under general anesthetic and will take 1-2 hours approximately. The procedure involves the cosmetic surgeon inserting silicone implants through a small incision usually underneath the natural breast. Once the implants are positioned correctly the incision will be closed with sutures and a dressing will be applied and left in place for around 7 days.
At around this 7 day mark a post-operative consultation will be arranged with your surgeon, the breast implants and your recovery will be assessed along with any questions you may have regarding returning to your usual daily activities.
Following the procedure you may feel a little tired and sore for a few days as you would with any surgery and you will be advised to rest. A supporting bra may be recommended after surgery.
In the first few weeks after breast enlargement surgery, the nipple area may be sensitive and sometimes there may be a small patch of numbness just above the area of incision. Such changes are invariably of a temporary nature and you should be able to return to your normal daily activities and back to work within a week (depending on what you do for a living.) You should however avoid heavy lifting and exercise for three to four weeks following the operation.
The implants used for breast enlargement surgery are a material foreign to the body and your body will naturally build a wall or capsule around the breast implants. With modern breast enlargement surgery, breast implants are so good that the degree of capsule formation following a breast enlargement operation is small and rarely presents a problem.
The majority of women find that they experience no problems and can forget that they ever underwent breast enlargement surgery. The scarring will continue to fade for the first year or more after your surgery and usually becomes unnoticeable.
Despite the potential problems outlined, the great majority of patients are very happy with their breast enlargement surgery and find that their new breasts have a natural look and feel giving them a new level of confidence.
