Cosmetic surgery increasing popular among UK men
It’s clear that the increasing popularity of cosmetic surgery isn’t restricted to women, with more men choosing to enhance their appearance with surgical procedures than ever before.
Last week, I wrote about a surprising study conducted in the UK that revealed that men are now more likely to consider cosmetic surgery procedures than women, with 46.2 per cent of British male respondents expressing interest in cosmetic treatments compared to 45.5 per cent of women.
But perhaps this result shouldn’t be so surprising – modern men feel just as much pressure as women to look their best, and retaining a youthful appearance into middle age can give men and women a decisive advantage in many professions, from actors to corporate climbers.
As men become ever more accepting of cosmetic surgery’s benefits, one area that has much to offer is surgical treatments aimed at correcting medical conditions. One treatment in particular that is currently experiencing a surge in interest is male chest reduction.
Just as women can seek breast reduction surgery to reduce the size of their breasts and achieve a natural result more suited to their figure, it seems that men are taking steps to combat the often embarrassing medical condition of gynecomastia, which sees the development of female glandular tissue in the chest due to an excess of female hormones. Although many of these so-called “moobs” disappear after puberty, many men retain the breasts throughout their lives, which can be a source of embarrassment and low self-esteem.
The BBC has reported a 44 per cent rise in male chest reductions carried out between 2007 and 2008, and an increase of 1,000 per cent in the last five years. With over 1,000 men being treated within the last year, this makes male chest reduction the fifth most popular cosmetic surgery treatment for British men, behind nose jobs, eye surgery, ear corrections and liposuction.
Modern men can face a great deal of pressure to look their best throughout their lives and careers, and by embracing cosmetic surgery, many are finally finding a solution.
