Author regains confidence following surgery
While stories about people who turn to cosmetic surgery as the result of bullying can leave some readers with mixed feelings, it’s heartening to see how the procedures can sometimes really turn someone’s life around.
A recent article in the London Evening Standard detailed how Constance Briscoe, the author of best-seller Ugly – a memoir – changed her life by undergoing cosmetic surgery after a lifetime of confidence-crushing abuse from her mother.
Growing up, Constance was continually told that she was ugly and that she’d never achieve anything because of her looks. Putting aside the disturbing fact that it was her own mother who said such things to her, you can’t help wondering if Constance would’ve undergone operations to change her looks had her childhood been different. Either way, it’s gratifying to know how much her life has improved since her childhood, as is the part that cosmetic surgery has helped her in achieving another step of her healing process.
Over the years, Constance underwent rhinoplasty, as well as operations on her lips and eyes. She also had foot surgery and teeth whitening and is a far happier person than the abused girl who suffered physically and mentally at the hands of her mother.
She’s a changed person, inside as well as out, with a whole new sense of self-esteem, one which is undoubtedly bolstered by the success of her successful memoir, a book that recounts the horrific abuse she underwent while growing up, as well as her recent success as a lawyer. In any case, I’m glad that she found a way in which she regain her confidence and hope that the surgery she underwent will always help her move forward.
