Dealing with cosmetic surgery criticism
The media tends to be no help when it comes to lampooning celebrities who undergo cosmetic surgery treatments, as if it’s something to be ashamed of that should mean it’s okay to single them out for criticism.
While I just don’t understand what the problem so much of the media has with plastic surgery patients – though I suspect it has as much to do with shifting papers as anything else – it’s a shame that the thought of what their peers might thing is something that puts so many people off undergoing surgical procedures.
Cosmetic surgery isn’t something that people choose to undertake on a whim. When a person has a cosmetic procedure – whether it’s liposuction, a facelift or a breast augmentation – it is always following a great deal of time spent researching the procedure and making what they know to be a life-changing decision.
People that have cosmetic surgery here at the Landauer Cosmetic Surgery clinic are often comprised of those who are deeply unhappy with some aspect of their body that want to experience what it’s like to feel proud of the way they look. It’s sad that the chance of their friends and family judging them based on what is a very personal decision can make them afraid to undergo the procedure and carry on hating the way they look.
It seems that in this society you just can’t win – I’ve met many patients who are having surgery as a result of deep psychological torment they have suffered from being teased about how they look. And when they finally emerge, pleased with their appearance at last, how often is it the case that they’ll receive just as much criticism for using surgical procedures to change their body?
I don’t expect the way cosmetic surgery is viewed to change overnight, but I hope people will someday think before they look down on somebody who has undergone cosmetic surgery. If you’re lucky enough to be happy with the way you look, that’s great – but it doesn’t give anybody the excuse to judge others for following their dreams.
